British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
